Four Pillars 年月日时
Yin–yang balance
Counted across the visible characters of your chart. Each stem and branch is either yang (active) or yin (receptive).
Five Elements in your chart
Element strength weighted · 五行强弱
How this is weighted
Each visible stem counts 1. Each branch counts 1, split across its hidden stems (藏干) as 60/30/10, 70/30 or 100%. The month branch (月令) counts double because the season sets each element's strength. Day Master support is your own element plus the element that feeds it, as a share of the total: under 42% reads as weak, over 52% as strong. A weak Day Master is helped by its resource and companion elements; a strong one by the elements it feeds, controls or is controlled by. BaZi schools weigh these factors differently, so treat this as one standard reading, not the final word.

What is Wuxing?
Wuxing (五行), the Five Elements, are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. They sit at the heart of Chinese metaphysics, medicine and feng shui. Your birth date maps to four pairs of characters, the Four Pillars (八字), and each character carries one element and a yin or yang polarity.
Counting them shows which elements your chart has plenty of and which are scarce. Tradition says that wearing, or living around, the colors of a scarce element brings it back into balance.
Common questions
How do I find my element?
Enter your birth date above. The calculator builds your Four Pillars and counts the element of each character; the element you have most of is your strongest, and the one you lack is the one tradition says to add.
What is my favorable element?
It depends on whether your Day Master is weak or strong once the chart is weighted. The Element strength section above works this out: a weak Day Master favors its resource and companion elements, a strong one favors the elements that drain, use or control it.
Do I need my birth time?
No. Without it you get three pillars (six characters). With it you get the hour pillar too, which makes the count complete.
Why does my zodiac differ from January birthdays?
The Chinese zodiac year starts at Lichun (立春), around February 4, not January 1. People born in January or early February belong to the previous zodiac year.
