Moon Sign Astrology

Most people are quite familiar at some level or another with Sun signs. These are the usual Zodiac signs we encounter very frequently such as Taurus, Aries, Gemini, Etc. What they are unaware of is that there also are Moon signs. Your Sun sign is determined by the position of the Sun during your birth date, it also goes the same with the moon.

In contrast, Your moon sign indicates what you see in yourself while your sun sign is about what others see in you. Some even consider the moon sign to be more important than its counterpart.

It opens a door to understanding your unconscious and in that, understanding who you really are. Though still relatively unknown, moon sign astrology has slowly been gaining popularity especially in Europe and Australia.

Similarly, moon sign astrology deals with the same zodiac signs with its counterparts. The Aries, Taurus , Gemini, Aquarius, Pisces, Libra, Capricorn, Cancer, Virgo , Leo, Scorpio, an Sagittarius are all part of moon signs. Like I said earlier, it deals with self-exploration of the deep recesses of the unconscious.

Why some would say that it is more important than sun sign I can only speculate is the idea that you have to be able to deal with yourself first, in order to be able to deal with others. Once you understand who you are, you will be able to deal with relationships with ease.

My personal experience on the matter is quite limited. Recently, I checked my moon sign and read about the traits it had. What I found puzzling was that it was a bit in contrast with that of my sun sign characteristics and at the same time both could actually describe me.

So I went through some sort of self-assessment and realized that indeed the characteristics of my sun sign are what people often tell me they think about me, whereas my moon sign have characteristics that are quite of a revelation as these are traits that I actually have but never before have I thought of having them.

It may seem a bit confusing, but if you were to do the same thing, you would arrive at the same conclusion. Still, it hasn’t changed my position on the subject. I still view both sun and moon sign astrology as a subject of pop culture and something that are great for light conversations and small talk.

The general idea on 2020 horoscopes should be that they are tools to help you with daily life and understanding yourself and others.

If you learn to not take the text literally, and know how to do self-discovery with the aid of what your signs tell you, then it should be easy to arrive at a good conclusion as to who you are, what you are, why you are, and what you are to others. It should be fun for anyone to wake up in the morning, look at their daily readings and go through the day to see if it is actually applicable.

The sign of the zodiac in which the Moon is posited at the time of a person’s birth is called the moon sign, which may not be the same as their sun sign (see box on the right).

The moon sign plays a very important role in Vedic astrology. In several parts of India, the moon sign is assigned so much significance that along with the natal chart, the horoscope is also cast on the basis of the moon sign known as rasi chakra or rasi kundali.

The moon is the fastest moving celestial body of the zodiac and closest to the earth and stays in one sign for about two and half days. All the key areas in astrology revolve around the moon sign whether it is the – Muhurta (auspicious time), Nakshatras (27 lunar mansions), dasa system, transits (gochara) or the inherent characteristics of an individual.

The association of the Moon with the ascendant is very important for harmonisation of the physical propensities with the mental makeup of the individual There is a kind of physio-psychological synchronisation as a result of which the individual gets the necessary energy to do what his heart wishes to achieve. In fact, there are several good and bad yogas (permutations and combination of planets) associated with the moon, some well known ones are Gajkesari and Chandramangala yoga.

What the moon sign indicates

The Moon rules the senses and emotions. The Moon also rules that part of the personality, which results from tendencies inherited from past lives, parents (the mother in particular), ancestry, and environmental conditioning in the present life.

The moon’s characteristic is its changeability as it waxes and wanes in two different 15 day cycles – which are the dark fortnight (krishnapaksha) and the shuklapaksha (the brighter fortnight) hence its influence is often unsettling.

And as the ascendant affects the physial health of an indivdual, the moon affects the mental health of an individual.
In a man’s chart, the moon indicates the women in his life in general.

Moon signs and your astro personality

ARIES – March 21 – April 20

The Moon in Aries makes its natives highly charged, impulsive and volatile. Since Aries as a sign rules the head and the Moon rules the mind – people born under this combination are imaginative and full of ideas. They also have the drive to implement all that they visualise. Emotional, warm and expressive, these individuals are sensitive and easily stimulated, though they may seem to be tough and strong. Their minds are easily agitated and they are generally short tempered.

TAURUS – April 21 – May 20

This is the sign where the Moon gets exalted in the Rohini Nakshatra. Its natives are peace loving, gentle and cheerful. The Moon brings out some of the best qualities of Taurus like generosity, a nurturing spirit, rejuvenation and fulfillment especially in emotional matters among others.

These people are very calm and are at peace with themselves and have a very soothing influence on those around them. They are fortunate and are blessed with a happy family life and material pleasures.

GEMINI – May 21 – June 20

The Moon in Gemini makes its natives very changeable and restless. They are forever seeking an emotional anchor and keep flitting from one idea to another and follow the same in their relationships too.

As there is no stabilising factor or an anchor, their attention span and affections are short lived. Both Mercury and the Moon are changeable and have traits, which if channelised well result in exceptional creativity.

CANCER – June 21 – July 21

This is the Moon’s own sign and hence it is on home ground. All the good qualities of the Moon will find full expression in Cancer. These individuals are highly sensitive, caring, mysterious, secretive, and love their homes and hearths. All Cancerians are very attached to their mothers.

Their lives are oriented around their loved ones and they like to take care of and nourish their loved ones – it could be family members, children, pets or plants. They are also said to have green fingers ie, the power to heal each and everything in their care.

LEO – July 22 – August 21

This is the house of the Sun and when the Moon is posited here, the emotional makeup of the person would be more or less authoritative, dominating and pompous. The emotions always take a backseat for them as their self- esteem and pride become more important.

These people are ruled by their heads as against their hearts, and for them dignity and self-respect are important attributes. Warm, generous and caring, they are also straight, honest and determined. They speak their mind and a shell of self -importance covers their soft emotional side.

VIRGO – August 22 – September 21

The earth element of the sign provides a stable and strong but fertile ground for the Moon to express itself. The caring and emotional aspects are more practically oriented here, as these individuals are methodical, prudent and wise.

They have the ability to perceive what lies beneath the surface and hence are analytical and critical, and their deep emotions are channelised selectively for larger causes rather than personal attachments. Sensible, rational and careful, they are reserved and quiet people.

LIBRA-  September 22 – October 22

These people are affectionate, charming and very amiable. Through this moon sign, the inherent creativity and artistic talents of the person find an easy expression. Their emotional makeup is stable, diplomatic and peace loving.

Artistically inclined with an eye for beauty and all that appeals to the senses, they create a pleasant ambience around themselves. They have a balanced and harmonious emotional outlook and express themselves in a very charming and pleasing manner. Their logical reasoning and peace loving nature makes them very adapting and adjusting people.

SCORPIO – October 23 – November 21

This is the sign of the debilitation of the Moon, what this implies is that the gentle qualities of the moon are shadowed to a certain extent by the overpowering influence of this fixed sign and its ruler, Mars.

These people are very intense, emotionally volatile and feel with a depth and intensity that is impossible for other signs. Hence all emotions and experiences are internalised and evoke very strong reactions, these people are very secretive and are ruled by their emotions. This emotional intensity if channelised well could lead to the unfolding of the latent powers hidden in the individual.

SAGITTARIUS – November 22 – December 20

The emotional outlook of these individuals is coloured by the auspicious, bright, and magnanimous planet Jupiter. Hence these people are optimistic, warm, generous and courageous. They are open and expressive and find it difficult to do things in a roundabout and complicated manner.

Full of energy, enthusiasm and warmth they are brave, honest and forthright. They have an inherent sense of right and wrong and have good judgement. They are fortunate and happy-go-lucky individuals.

CAPRICORN – December 21 – January 19

Again this is the sign opposite Cancer, which is the Moon’s own house hence in this sign, the Moon’s own nature finds it difficult to find expression under the stern gaze of Saturn. These people keep their emotions in check and present a very cold, stern and reserve exterior.

They are labeled selfish as their first instinct is to look after their own interest but on the positive side it indicates their focussed and one-track approach to things. Practical and prudent, they single-mindedly work towards their goal and are driven by cold-blooded ambition.

AQUARIUS-  January 20 – February 18

Saturn also rules this sign but the air element is conducive to the Moon. The emotional and mental makeup of these people is very understanding, accepting and humanitarian. The world is not just limited to themselves and their environment but over a larger cause and sphere.

Intellectual, sharp and humane, their emotions are channelised for the improvement of society and people. They have a futuristic vision and intelligence to perceive the trends of the future. They are impersonal and detached when it comes to interpersonal relationships.

PISCES – February 19 – March 20

The Moon in this sign ruled by Jupiter indicates people who are mature, and are on the path to spiritual enlightenment. These individuals are imaginative, dreamy, very emotional and sensitive.

This sensitivity combined with the philosophical outlook of the individual leads to developed psychic faculties and intuition. They have the ability to see dreams that come true and can sense things, which are yet to happen. However they are changeable and subject to mood swings also.
